This image from around 1885, titled "View from South Wharf" by the photographer, shows the dredge "Griper" going about its work of clearing the build up of silt and soil from the Yarra River. Griper was just one of a small number of dredgers that kept the wharf areas, the river entrance, and the bends in the river suitably cleared for the large ships that came right up to the edge of the City. The photo is looking towards the south wharf.
