1880c Old View in Queen Street
Description
A photo from around 1880, looking across Queen Street towards the corner of Collins Street. By 1890 the shops and factories that face Queen Street would be demolished to make way for a couple of Melbourne's most beautiful and impressive buildings, viz. the ES&A Bank, and the Safe Deposit Building.
A number of landmarks can be seen in the distance, such as the spires of the Independent Church (now St Michael's), Scots' Church and St Enoch's. The clocktower of the Melbourne Town Hall (Prince Alfred's Tower) is also visible. The twin towers of the Union Bank in Collins Street are unmistakable.
