Description

A photograph of the Theatre Royal (1872-1933) in 1877, where a production entitled "Pluto" was playing to enthralled crowds. This building was at 236 Bourke Street on the northern side between Swanston Street and Russell Street. A store which found accommodation in the ground floor of the theatre was S.S. Hough & Co.'s Depot of Novelties, also offering themselves as Importers of Fancy Goods.

The theatre replaced the previous Theatre Royal on this site, which burnt down in 1872.
