1875 Map of Point Nepean
Description
A reproduction of a chart published in 1875 showing information about the area within Point Nepean.
After settlement in 1835, a number of quarantine areas had been established at various points around the coast of Port Phillip Bay. However, in 1852, Governor LaTrobe selected Point Nepean as the site for a new quarantine area, and the colonial government assigned £5000 for a 'sanatorium'. Just one month after deciding on the location, the "Ticonderoga" sailed through the heads with almost three hundred people onboard with scarlet fever and typhus, and a further hundred dead. The ship was from Liverpool, leaving with 714 passengers and 48 crew.
Parts of this area remained operating as a quarantine station right up to 1980.
This is a digitally retouched reproduction of the original held by the State Library of Victoria. All prints are reproduced without the HOTPRESS watermarks.
Our team of conservators have worked on a high resolution digital image in order to remove blemishes and artifacts such as stains, mould, scratches and damage caused by the handling of the original. We strive to provide authentic representations of the original work that are suitable for enlargements that retain the tones and character of the original.
