1874 Richmond - Church Street
Description
A photo from 1874, looking south down Church Street from the corner of Gipps Street. Swan Street crosses further down, with the Swan Hotel on the south-east corner. A little further south we can see the bluestone walls that are part of the railway tunnel that connects East Richmond Station (known at the time as Church Street Station) with Burnley Station.
Church Street deviates to the left a little and finishes at the Yarra River, and continues south as Chapel Street. Way off in the distance we can clearly see the clocktower of the Prahran Town Hall.
Over on the right of the photo we can see a large vineyard, one of a number that were established on the north side of the hill where Punt Road climbs up from the Yarra. Further over to the right we can see Fairlie House, a magnificent Mansion that had enormous grounds and views over the Botanical Gardens.
