1874 Queen Street looking South from Collins Street

MI_1205

A photograph in 1874 of Queen Street looking south from Collins Street. Queen Street ends at Flinders Street, but beyond that we see a wooden Sandridge Railway Bridge crossing the Yarra, with industrial buildings on the south bank, and the homes of Emerald Hill (South Melbourne) rising in the far distance.

The substantial building on the SE (left) corner is the Union Bank Building, the SW (right) corner accommodates the Imperial Fire Insurance Company. Further down on the right hand side is the Oriental Bank, looking very much like a Grecian temple.
