Faraday Street in Carlton, 1874, looking to the east over Lygon Street, down to Nicholson Street, where we see Carlton College, some 700m away from the photographer.
A number of buildings in the photo still exist, including the Melbourne and Tea Company's structure on the left, now (2024) a liquor store occupied by King and Godfree, and the "London Chartered Bank of Australia" building, now (2024) occupied by "Grill'd Burgers".
Carlton College - the large white building at the end of Faraday St - was located on Nicholson Street, midway between Victoria St and Bell St. The College was founded in the early 1870s and remained at that location until 1877, when the owners moved the College to Royal Park. It eventually closed in 1909.
