Description

A photo from 1870, looking along Flinders Lane to the east from Queen Street. Flinders Lane runs from Spencer Street at its western end to Spring Street in the east. It is parallel with Flinders Street and sits between Flinders and Collins Streets. In the photo we can see the streets that cross, viz., Elizabeth, Swanston and Russell Streets.

In early Melbourne, Flinders Lane was a very busy commercial and industrial area, as it was the rear entrance to a large number of import warehouses, factories and hotels that faced Flinders Street.

The thoroughfare was originally called Little Flinders Street, in the same manner as Little Collins Street, etc. Nevertheless, it was referred to by the locals as just "The Lane" for a number of years, and Superintendent LaTrobe gazetted in 1843 that it be renamed as Flinders Lane. From early maps around 1850, it is marked as Flinders Lane. Nevertheless "the Lane" existed with two names, viz., Flinders Lane and Little Flinders Street on street signs and addresses. Still, the council took until 1948 to reaffirm its official name as "Flinders Lane".
