1892 Swanston Street looking south from Collins Street

Description

This photograph of the southern end of Swanston Street was taken in 1892, looking across Collins Street. The beautiful building on the left was the Victoria Buildings, erected in 1888, and sadly removed to make way for the City Square around 1966. Further down the road is the Cathedral Hotel, with St Paul's (unspired) Cathedral peeking out from behind the Hotel.

Cable Trams had only been introduced in 1885, and were a very convenient way of moving around the city and nearby suburbs. The automobile had not made its presence felt, still nearly 20 years away.
