1867 Looking east across Melbourne

MP_1073

A view of Melbourne around 1867 looking from Queen Street, to the east across to the State Library in Swanston Street.

On the legend image, you can see from the left - Old Melbourne Gaol, the Old Law Courts, La Trobe Street, the State Library (before the portico was added in 1870), the facades of some shops in Elizabeth Street, John Knox's Church (still there in Swanston Street), Little Lonsdale Street, the General Hospital (later known as Queen Victoria Hospital), the steeple of Wesley Church in Lonsdale Street, St Peter's on Eastern Hill, and St Patrick's Cathedral under construction.
