Description

A very detailed photograph in 1874 of Lonsdale Street looking east from Queen Street.

From the left we can see the Melbourne Hospital (opened 1846) just peeking out behind some buildings. not far away is Wesley Church (opened 1858), St Andrew's (1846) in Rathdowne Street, Carlton. In the centre of the image is the National Model and Training School (1854). Over on the right is St Peter's Anglican Church (1848) on Eastern Hill, and St Patrick's Roman Catholic Cathedral (commenced 1858) under construction). Between the churches we can see  the high roof of Princess Theatre. Then further to the right we see the Houses of Parliament (started 1855) under construction.
