Description
A photograph from around 1888 looking east along Collins Street across Queen Street. This building was erected in 1887 to a design by William Wardell for the ES & A (English, Scottish and Australia) Chartered Bank, and still stands today.
Commonly known as the "The Gothic Bank", it reflects Wardell's architectural strengths in church design, while following Verdon's detailed instructions. The entire ground floor was established as the banking chamber, and the first and second floors as a residence for the General Manager, Sir George Verdon.
