1920c Bourke Street looking east

MI_1130

A photograph from around 1920/1921 looking east along Bourke Street. The photographer is standing a hundred metres or so, west of the GPO on the corner of Elizabeth Street.

On the left hand side of the photo we see the Cromwell Building on the NW corner of Bourke and Elizabeth, the GPO on the NE corner, then further along the tall Myer Building, and the Buckley & Nunn building next to it. On the NE corner of Swanston we see the Orient Hotel, with its distinctive Asian-style turret. At the eastern end of Bourke Street Parliament House rises from Spring Street. Behind that building we see St Patrick's Cathedral, yet to receive its spires, which were completed in 1939.

On the right hand side we see the globe that surmounted the Tivoli Theatre, the Leviathan Building, located on the SW corner of Swanston Street, then the Beehive Clothing Company's building, later to be replaced by London Stores.  On the extreme right we see the beautiful Metropole Hotel (1891-1974), and next door is the Saracen's Head Hotel, and after that is John Danks and Sons.
