1867 Bourke Street looking west

MI_1152

A photograph from 1867 looking west along Bourke Street, and across the west of Melbourne. The photograph was taken from the top of the newly erected GPO building on the NE corner of Elizabeth Street.

The detailed photograph allows us to see into the yards of houses and establishments of that time.

Bourke Street is clearly visible on the left. The GPO is on Elizabeth Street (just out of the foreground in the photo), so the next street running across the image is Queen Street. William, King and Spencer Street are off in the distance.

The telegraph office with its timeball on its tower is located in William Street, on the corner of Little Bourke Street. .
