A photo of the south side of Collins Street looking westerly towards Elizabeth Street, around 1887. The main building in the centre is the "Australian Deposit And Mortgage Bank Limited". Some of the architecture is remarkable, and yet, none of its exists today.
This era in the city's growth gave rise to the phrase "Marvellous Melbourne", as offered by the renowned travel author, George Sala, in 1885. Collins Street displayed some of the most extravagent architecture in the country.
