Description

A photograph of the second Theatre Royal (1872-1933) in 1877, where a production entitled "Pluto" was playing to enthralled crowds.

This building was at 236 Bourke Street on the northern side between Swanston Street and Russell Street. A store which found accommodation in the ground floor of the theatre was S.S. Hough & Co.'s Depot of Novelties, also offering themselves as Importers of Fancy Goods.

The original Theatre Royal on this site burned down on 19th March 1872. George Coppin rebuilt the theatre, making it bigger and more impressive, and it opened on the 5th November 1872.
