The foundation stone for the Cathedral was laid in 1858, and construction took longer than expected, with the Cathedral being consecrated in 1897. The spires were not added until the late 1930s and the building was completed in 1939. It is the largest church in Australia. Its location is on Eastern Hill, the highest point in the City of Melbourne.
