1900 Fish Market Building
Description
A photograph of Melbourne's original Fish Market building, captured in 1900 shortly before its demolition in November of that year.
Opened in 1865 on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets, this purpose-built market featured slate display trays, ice storage, and a central chamber for cart access, processing 12 tons of seafood weekly.
After the new Fish Market relocated west to Flinders Street in 1892, the building transitioned to operating as a bicycle stable and fruit and butcher store until its removal in 1900 to accommodate Flinders Street Station's expansion. This digitally restored image reveals period details including horse-drawn wagons, early signage, and the curved roof of the temporary station's booking office and clocks
Another view of the market building as it was in 1874 is here.
