Description
A British WWI recruiting poster from 1915, asking unenlisted men to "Remember Belgium" and to enlist today. This is in reference to Germany's invasion of Belgium, which declared itself in 1839 to be an independent and perpetually neutral state. Germany did massive damage to Belgium and its people, despite its formal agreement of a joint treaty predating the commencement of the war, agreeing that Belgium was a neutral state. The British Government referred to Germany's treatment of Belgium continually to remind the British people of why they should fight Germany and its allies.
