1920s A Fleeting Gleam

MI_1192

An atmospheric image of shipping on the Yarra River by John Kauffman, sometime in the early 1920s, looking east with the tower and dome of Flinders Street Station off in the distance. Melbourne was only ninety years old, yet was one of the major cities in the British Empire at the time.

John Kauffman was one of the primary exponents of pictorialism in Australia. One newspaper claimed that his photographs that could be "mistaken for works of art".

His beautiful rendition here of vessels, the river and the shipping industry has been executed as if looking through a tearful eye.
