Description

A photo from 1874, looking west from the southern end of the Falls Bridge, showing some of the environment on the south bank of the Yarra River. On the far left is a small Customs booth, where the staff control the Toll Gate, which is open at that time.

Further to the right is W. Sinnott, a coal merchant, who traded from the building with the three arched windows. Then we can see the yard of James McFeat & Co., engineers and boilermakers.

Standing proud is R. J. Hilliard's Yarra Bank Hotel, then beyond a vacant lot is Joseph Snowball's Safety Fuse Works. Substantial industry continues along the bank of the Yarra, hidden by the bend in the river.

On the right of the photo we can see a number of large ships berthed at the wharves along the north side of the river. The young man with the bowler hat, perched on the large bollard, was Charles Bayliss's assistant.
