1874 Carlton, Madeline Street
Description
A photograph from 1874 of Madeline Street, looking south to its intersection with Victoria Parade. For many years, the northern portion of present-day Swanston Street from Victoria Parade northwards to the Cemetery, was named Madeline Street.
Queensberry Street runs across the photo, with Madeline House on the south-east corner and Queensberry Hotel on the south-west corner. Fagan's Queensberry Hotel was upgraded to a very different structure in 1890, and the hotel still trades at that address 150 or so years after the photo was taken.
