1798 Chart of Bass's Straits
Description
An early chart of the southern mainland coast of Australia, showing the newly discovered Bass's (sic) Straits, along with the major islands between the mainland and Van Diemen's Land to the south.
The chart also shows the "Tracks and Discoveries of different Vessels between 28th Sept 1800 and 9th March 1802, Including Lieut M. Flinders's Track and Discoveries in 1798."
The strait was named after George Bass, after he and Matthew Flinders sailed across it while circumnavigating Van Diemen's Land (now named Tasmania) in the Norfolk in 1798–99.
