Rattlesnake, the commander of which was Captain Hobson. The new magistrate was Captain Lonsdale, of the 4th or King's Own Regiment. He was followed by 30 soldiers of his regiment under Ensign King, accompanied by Robert Russell, W. Darke, and F. R. d'Arcy, surveyors.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #888888;\"\u003e\"Russell at once began to plot out a township, running his lines for the most part through existing holdings, to the accompaniment of a chronic grumbling and discontent. A shower of petitions went to Sydney, asking for reassurance that the land sale which impended would be held, not in Sydney as rumoured, but on the spot. Bourke [Governor of New South Wales] wisely resolved to inspect Port Phillip personally, and he arrived by the Rattlesnake on March 4, 1837. His secretary (G. K. Holden), his aide (Captain King), and the new surveyor-general (Robert Hoddle) accompanied him.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #888888;\"\u003e\u003cem\u003e\"The business-like Bourke immediately mounted [his horse] without waiting to see his tent pitched, and, attended by the surveyors, picked his way among ungrubbed stumps and primeval forest along Russell's survey lines. These, which covered the area bounded by Flinders, Spencer, Lonsdale, and Spring streets, were approved, and the rough plan was handed over to Hoddle to work upon. The width of the main streets was fixed at 99 feet, instead of 66 feet as Russell had intended, and the Governor insisted on the provision of \"mews\" to serve the rear of the proposed allotments. This meant that the residents of the village could draw fresh drinking water most of the year. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe Falls can be seen in this image as dark stones. The indigenous people had used these stones as a means of crossing the river for perhaps thousands of years. And so did the new settlers, relying on a number of punts until a small wooden bridge was built further upstream in 1840.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBatman and his nemesis, Fawkner, had settled into the area mid-to-late 1835, and both had established rough dwellings for their families. By 1837 the Settlement was seeing more and more residents arriving, along with their sheep, cattle and dogs. This was all disturbed in March of that year when Governor Bourke arrived from Sydney in order to prepare the land into blocks suitable for sale. Robert Hoddle was the surveyor who came with Bourke, and using Russell's survey, he laid out the streets of Melbourne initially in accordance with Governor Darling's Town Planning Order 28 (which defined a rectangular village with pre-ordained street widths and property sizes).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eRussell made many sketches of early Melbourne and, later in his life, he returned to his sketchbook and created a number of iconic watercolours based on those early sketches. One of his recommendations was the removal of \"The Falls\". Melbourne Harbour Trust were responsible for the removal of the falls, and this photo shows two of the five divers who were boring holes into the rocky falls, so that dynamite would be used to blow the rocks up. The drilling operations attracted large numbers of curious spectators who watched the divers descend and ascend each day.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe Falls were an ancient basalt ridge (roughly located where Queens Bridge is today) that created a low barrier across the river, that usually stopped the seawater from mixing with the freshwater coming down the Yarra. This was important to the founding of the Settlement in 1835 as it provided the European settlers with fresh water, except when there were extremely high tides or floods. They were high enough to keep fresh water coming downstream separate from the sea-water that came into the river from Port Phillip Bay. The local natives used this barrier for thousands of years to gather fresh water, and to capture fresh-water fish. They also used the barrier to cross the river.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe Falls (and the freshwater that they impeded) were noted by the first European to visit this area, namely \u003cstrong\u003eCharles Grimes\u003c\/strong\u003e, who was sent to \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/collections\/melbourne-maps\/products\/1803-port-phillip-survey-map-charles-grimes\" title=\"Charles Grimes Survey of Port Phillip\"\u003esurvey Port Phillip Bay in 1803\u003c\/a\u003e. He realised that his plan for a settlement needed fresh water, and the pool of fresh water formed by the Falls provided that essential element. However, at high tide the barrier was too low to stop the seawater from mixing with the fresh water, thereby depriving the residents of drinkable water supplies. At this point in the Yarra there was a naturally wide section, known as the Turning Basin, where ships could turn around to get back to the Bay. Within a few years the river bank was better defined and wooden piles were put into the river bank to support the increasing amount of trade that was coming into early Melbourne. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eBayliss' assistant can be seen standing on the wharf's edge. Behind him is Flinders Street, which runs along the Yarra, with the main buildings being hotels and customs storage. The wharves had been extended for a full mile to the west (as seen in the photo) and both the north and south banks were used for goods and passenger transport. It was replaced by the Flinders Street viaduct in 1891. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Melbourne area has had flood problems for thousands of years, and after a decade or so of suggestions and options in the 1860s, a plan was put forward in 1879 by Coode, who recommended that the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/products\/1883-removing-the-falls\"\u003eFalls be removed\u003c\/a\u003e and that the river be widened and straightened. This was a huge project, where many kilometres of the Yarra River were altered, straightened, dredged and re-banked. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1883 \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/products\/1874-the-falls-bridge\"\u003ethe old Falls Bridge\u003c\/a\u003e was removed, allowing the actual Falls to be blown up and the river to be widened and dredged to constant depths. The banks of the Yarra were strengthened and protected by bluestone walls. You can see the preparations for the new Queens Bridge on the right hand side, it was competed in 1890. This area was used by the indigenous peoples to catch fish and was also used as a somewhat dangerous, natural footbridge to cross between the north and south banks of the river.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eJohn Batman (Melbourne's founder) came to this area in 1835, searching for a suitable location to establish a village and farming in the area. He knew of the existence of the Falls, because he had studied the maps produced by Matthew Flinders and Charles Grimes in 1803, and when he left Launceston he knew what he was looking for and where to find it. \u003cspan\u003eHe realised that his plan for a settlement needed fresh water, and the pool of water formed by the Falls provided that essential element. \u003c\/span\u003eOnce he arrived at the Falls he pronounced \"This will be the place for a village\". \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eA new bridge (apart from the original Princes Bridge, built in 1850) that allowed movement across the Yarra was deemed necessary for many years since then, but arguments went back and forth about exactly where it should be located, and the options included a Spencer Street Bridge, a King Street Bridge, and a Falls Bridge. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eA final decision for a bridge at this location was officially presented in 1856, and it was proposed as the \"Moray Street Bridge\", which would allow traffic to pass from Queens Street through to Moray Street (which at the time was a main road to the south). \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eHowever, disputes between the railway owners and the council hindered any progress until 1860, when later that year the bridge was constructed and given the name \"Queen's Bridge\". Most people at the time had been referring to it for many years prior to its construction as the \"Falls Bridge\".  \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe bridge and the Falls were both removed in 1883 as part of a major infrastructure upgrade in the area, which involved widening and realignment of the Yarra.
