The block of land that this building is on was originally purchased by John Batman in 1837 for £100, during the first land auction. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe Prince's Bridge Hotel opened there on 1st of July 1861, with John Toohey as the first licensee. The licence was transferred to James Hogan in 1862, then to Joshua Roberts Mooney in 1866 (see photo displaying \"Mooney's\" over the front door). In 1875 the licence was acquired by two Irish gold diggers from Dublin, cousins Henry Young and Thomas Jackson, who had been licencees of the Sparrow's Hotel in St Kilda. Fortunately for Melbourne, the Princes Bridge Hotel still stands, and since 1904 has been the home of \"Chloe\", a very famous French nude painting from 1875.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe large building on the left was originally built as Melbourne's Fish Market in 1865. As Melbourne grew and health regulations and traffic congestion increased, a new location for the Fish Market was built at the western end of Flinders Street, on the south-east corner of its intersection with Spencer Street. The original building continued as a fruit market and bicycle stables until the late 1890s, at which time plans were being developed for an enlarged Flinders Street Station which was completed in 1909, and the new Fish Market was completed in 1892. This is a copy of the first prize design, coloured to represent the materials to be used as described in the report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Railways dated 1\/10\/1900. The drawings belonged to the contractor for Flinders Street Railway Station, Peter Rodger.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe Victorian Government decided in 1882 to create a new central city railway station to replace the various components of the existing station that had sprung up over the previous 30 years. The basic elements such as the location of the concourse, the various entrances, the track and platform layout, even the type of platform roofing were already in place and were not part of the upgrade. A design competition was held in 1899, and \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/collections\/flinders-street-station\/products\/1900-flinders-street-station-prize-winning-design\"\u003ethe winning design\u003c\/a\u003e came from two railway employees. Works commenced in 1900, and the building itself took shape between 1905 and 1910.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eMany hours have gone into restoring this image to make it suitable for enlargements. This business became part of the Gas and Fuel Corporation in 1951, and they subsequently moved from this building to the Gas and Fuel twin towers (now demolished) in 1967.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eTo the right of the Gas building is the Ball \u0026amp; Welch building. This business was established by Charles Ball and his nephew W. H. Welch in the 1850s. They had a number of stores in country Victoria and established their first Melbourne branch in Carlton in 1874. This particular building was completed in 1899. Ball \u0026amp; Welch were Melbourne's leading drapery, with the company bought out by George's in 1970, and eventually all stores were closed in 1976 due to declining profits.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eJust next to Ball \u0026amp; Welch we can see construction underway for the Majestic Theatre, which opened in 1912.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe small two-storey building on the corner of Flinders and Russell is the Duke of Wellington Hotel. Erected in 1850 and licensed in 1853, it is the oldest licensed pub in Melbourne.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eAlmost at the end of Flinders Street we see the Griffith's Brothers Tea Warehouse. This was built in 1905 to house their \u003cspan\u003enew store and sales room for teas, coffees and cocoas. This building was leased to Verona press in the 1940s and became a printing house. The Herald newspaper group purchased the building in the 1960s and used it for offices until 1973. For many years it was occupied by the Lindrum family as a Melbourne billiard and snooker-playing establishment. Eventually Lindrum's Billiard Centre closed in 1988 after the Herald and Weekly Times decided to reuse the building for office space. They eventually sold the building in 1995 and the current owners reopened it as the boutique Lindrum Hotel in 1999. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eOn the south side of Flinders Street we see Princes Bridge Railway Station building, demolished in 1964 to make way for the horrible Gas and Fuel Corporation twin towers, which were ultimately demolished in 1996 for the Federation Square project. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eFurther to the right of the photograph we see the complex of railway lines that lead out of the city to the east and south.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe wooded area off in the distance is the area known as Jolimont, named by Lieutenant-Governor LaTrobe's wife in 1839 in honour of her beloved home in Switzerland. The licence was transferred to James Hogan in 1862, then to Joshua Roberts Mooney in 1866. In 1875 the licence was acquired by two Irish gold diggers from Dublin, cousins Henry Young and Thomas Jackson, who had been licencees of the Sparrow's Hotel in St Kilda. Fortunately for Melbourne, the Princes Bridge Hotel still stands, and since 1904 has been the home of \"Chloe\", a very famous French nude painting from 1875.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThe large building on the left was originally built as Melbourne's Fish Market in 1865. As Melbourne grew and health regulations and traffic congestion increased, a new location for the Fish Market was built at the western end of Flinders Street, on the south-east corner of its intersection with \u003ca title=\"Link to the Spencer Street collection\" href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/collections\/melbourne-spencer-street\"\u003eSpencer Street\u003c\/a\u003e. It is visible in the photo, running parallel with Flinders Street. This was a single line operating only during the night hours, carrying freight only. It was replaced by the Flinders Street viaduct in 1891. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Melbourne area has had flood problems for thousands of years, and after a decade or so of suggestions and options in the 1860s, a plan was put forward in 1879 by Coode, who recommended that the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/products\/1883-removing-the-falls\"\u003eFalls be removed\u003c\/a\u003e and that the river be widened and straightened. This was a huge project, where many kilometres of the Yarra River were altered, straightened, dredged and re-banked. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1883 \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/products\/1874-the-falls-bridge\"\u003ethe old Falls Bridge\u003c\/a\u003e was removed, allowing the actual Falls to be blown up and the river to be widened and dredged to constant depths. The banks of the Yarra were strengthened and protected by bluestone walls. You can see the preparations for the new Queens Bridge on the right hand side, it was competed in 1890. From early maps around 1850, it is marked as Flinders Lane. Nevertheless \"the Lane\" existed with two names, viz., Flinders Lane and Little Flinders Street on street signs and addresses.
