The building was completed in 1872 and the first Melbourne sovereign was minted on the 8th of July that year. The Melbourne Mint was part of the British Royal Mint and was created to handle the massive gold production in Australia and to reduce the export of gold to be turned into coinage. The Sydney Mint closed in 1926 and the Royal Melbourne Mint became the mint of the Commonwealth and the sole contractor for the production of Commonwealth coinage. The Melbourne Mint stopped production in 1968, and all coin production now occurs at the Royal Mint in Canberra. Melbourne's Royal Mint building has been given an \"A\" classification by the National Trust, which means that it is to be preserved unconditionally.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eThis magnificent building still stands today on the south-east corner of William and Latrobe Streets. The Town Hall towers over pedestrians and a hansom cab in the foreground, partially obscuring the grand Victoria Buildings behind. In 1867 the architects Reed \u0026amp; Barnes won the competition to design a new Town Hall which was subsequently built and opened on 9 August 1870. When the portico was added 18 years later, a contemporary report in The Australasian Sketcher stated that it 'will be of great benefit to the large audiences which so frequently assemble in this building for concerts, balls, dinners, etc'. Georges (founded by brothers William and Alfred George in 1880) moved in after a fire forced them to move from their original site further west in Collins Street in 1889, with \"Georges\" at 162 Collins Street soon becoming Melbourne's most exclusive shopping address.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"color: #003300;\"\u003eCox Brothers took over Georges from 1960-66, with David Jones Ltd buying the business in 1981. Sadly, Georges ceased trading after 115 years in 1995. Fortunately, the building survives and now houses a number of smaller specialist retailers. It is visible in the photo, running parallel with Flinders Street. This was a single line operating only during the night hours, carrying freight only. It was replaced by the Flinders Street viaduct in 1891. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Melbourne area has had flood problems for thousands of years, and after a decade or so of suggestions and options in the 1860s, a plan was put forward in 1879 by Coode, who recommended that the \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/products\/1883-removing-the-falls\"\u003eFalls be removed\u003c\/a\u003e and that the river be widened and straightened. This was a huge project, where many kilometres of the Yarra River were altered, straightened, dredged and re-banked. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn 1883 \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/hotpress.com.au\/products\/1874-the-falls-bridge\"\u003ethe old Falls Bridge\u003c\/a\u003e was removed, allowing the actual Falls to be blown up and the river to be widened and dredged to constant depths. The banks of the Yarra were strengthened and protected by bluestone walls. You can see the preparations for the new Queens Bridge on the right hand side, it was competed in 1890.
